About the Artist
From a very early age, Ronald D. Hales found a fascination with the human face and body through observation and constant drawing. Raised in the creative environment that was always present with his mother’s activities, he explored a curiosity about how things worked, how something could be made differently, in what way elements such as color, shape, and textures could be put into a pleasing design. This led to a successful career as an architect spanning the first decades of his professional life.

During this “first career,” Mr. Hales’ interest in people and the world around him never waned as he continued to draw and paint. After retirement from architecture, he has spent the past decade developing his passion through self study plus training with the country’s top portrait artists such as Bert Silverman, John Howard Sanden, Richard Whitney, Daniel Green, and Michael Del Priore. Many clients attest to their satisfaction with not only the finished product but also the complete portrait process. Combining the skills honed in his architectural office, Mr. Hales makes sure the client is involved with every step of the process as he offers several creative proposals along with professional counseling for each commission.

The goal for Mr. Hales is that, upon completion, the finished product is viewed by the client with continual satisfaction and pleasure and that their goal was fully met. His work hangs in the halls of several of Utah's universities, museums, public venues and religious institutions, as well as personal collections

Realizing the need to be aware of his surroundings, the aritist also finds great pleasure in "plein air" painting. That is, painting live, in the outdoors.

Mr. Hales is a Signature Member of the American Society of Portrait Artists and past State Ambassador for the Portrait Society of America. He was selected to teach portrait classes with the National Art Materials Trade Association (NAMTA) in Pasadena, California, and Toronto, Canada. His clients range from commissions produced for the corporate and institutional world, to personal and family life. These are represented by not only formal portraits and personal studies, but also by many client-commissioned illustrations that attest to his variety and creativity

. . . . . and his curiosity beyond the norm.
